Promoting You and Your Website Online

Welcome back to part 4 of this series. If you have been working along as you receive these messages then you have a website and maybe even have your first post or other piece of content published for the world to see.
So, how do you let the world know that they should come and take a look?
That’s where things like SEO (search engine optimization) and Social Media come in, and that is what I want to talk about this time and continue next time.

Search Engine Optimization

Search Engine Optimization sounds like something big and complicated and the so-called “gurus” will tell you that it is big and complicated. After all, why would you buy their products if they told you it was easy. It is easy though. SEO is just a checklist of things that you can do to make sure that the search engines know your page exists and what it is about so that they can list you properly in their search results.
SEO for me is about three things: keywords, internal links, and in-coming external links. Let’s take a look at keywords today and links next time.
Keywords and key phrases are the words and phrases that people enter into the search engines when they search for something. Let’s say that you are selling a water filtration system. What kinds of phrases might people type into Google when searching for your product?

  • water filter
  • water filtration
  • water filtration system
  • whole house water filter
  • water filter cartridge
  • water filter bottle

These are just a handful of examples. There are probably plenty more that you can come up with. If these phrases apply to your product then you want to make sure that they appear in your content at least a few times. Make sure that when you insert keywords into your content that it reads naturally. You don’t want any oddly worded phrases just to get your keyword in one more time because your content is also for the real people you want to attract to buy your product.
Good places to use your keywords are in titles and headings. If at all possible, include your best keyword phrase in the title of your post. Then you can include other keywords in subheadings.

There are other good places to insert your keyword phrases on your pages where only the search engines will see them. When you insert a link, be sure to include your keywords in the title field. When you insert a picture you can add your keywords to the title and alt text fields.

One place that is essential to have your keywords is in the keyword meta tag. The easiest way that I know of to handle this in WordPress is to use the All in One SEO Pack plugin. I will explain all about that in the following video.

Next time we will continue with internal and external links. In the meantime, pay attention to how you use the search engines and think about the keywords that your target market would likely use to find your products.
